Details

The project established a circular economy system for PET and HDPE plastics on campus. Over 25 return points were installed, linked to automated sorting and baling units. Plastics were transferred to local recyclers, with some repurposed into prototype materials such as recycled paving blocks and classroom furniture.

A student-led “EcoCredit” platform rewarded points for plastic returns, redeemable at campus shops, driving behavioral change. A lifecycle assessment (LCA) of recycled products quantified environmental impacts and validated systemic benefits.

In year one, over 12 tons of plastics were collected, contamination in general waste dropped 35%, and recycled prototypes were deployed in public areas. More than 480 students participated in returns and EcoCredit use. The initiative supports SDG 12 and SDG 13 and fulfills 2024 indicators 34 and 96.
