Campus Wetland Restoration for Biodiversity
Faculty of Agriculture at Kamphaeng Saen , Kamphaeng Saen Campus
Details
This project arose from surveys of abandoned ponds on campus, which revealed degraded ecosystems and reduced aquatic fauna. The Faculty of Environment initiated a wetland restoration program, dredging sediments, replanting native aquatic plants, and establishing vegetative buffer zones to improve water quality and provide new habitats for fish and waterbirds.
During the pilot phase, automated water quality monitoring was installed, and previously absent species such as gourami, climbing perch, and teal ducks began to return. Students and local residents joined hands-on activities to plant aquatic vegetation and care for the site.
After one year, water quality improved significantly, fish diversity rose by 12 species, and over 20 waterbird species recolonized. The project supports SDG 6 and SDG 15 and fulfills 2023 indicators 34 and 96.
