Campus Water Footprint & Leak Reduction Initiative
Faculty of Liberal Arts and Science , Kamphaeng Saen Campus
Details
This initiative advanced campus water management by compiling a full water footprint across academic buildings, dormitories, canteens, and green spaces. Zone-level smart meters and pressure-control valves were deployed, feeding a dashboard that integrated data from 120+ points and the pumping station SCADA. The system detected abnormal usage patterns and leaks in real time and analyzed hourly use against timetables, events, and weather.
Field teams executed predictive maintenance using statistical models, acoustic leak detection, and tracer gas. A communication program produced a “Use Water Wisely” guide for students and vendors, paired with incentives for buildings achieving sustained reductions.
In the first year, leak losses dropped by 38%, net water consumption decreased by 19% (~31,000 m³), and pumping energy fell by 14%. The knowledge was formalized into an elective course. The project aligns with SDG 6, SDG 12, and SDG 13, and fulfills 2023 indicators 34 and 96.
