Agroforestry Buffer Zone for Soil and Water Conservation
Faculty of Liberal Arts and Science , Kamphaeng Saen Campus
Details
The Faculty of Forestry, in collaboration with local communities, established agroforestry buffer zones on 50 acres of sloping land around the campus to prevent soil erosion and conserve water. Trees were intercropped with maize and legumes to create root systems that stabilized soil and enhanced infiltration.
Contour ditches and demonstration plots were implemented to measure erosion reduction, while data on soil fertility and biodiversity were recorded. The practices were integrated into forestry and agriculture curricula for student training.
After one year, soil erosion declined by 35%, over 40 farming households benefitted directly, and small wildlife species returned to the area. The project supports SDG 2, SDG 13, and SDG 15, and fulfills 2024 indicators 34 and 96.
